Who's involved in the service?

The Sussex Air Quality Partnership established and manages the service with specialist support from partners in health information, research and technical support for the airAlert message service.

airAlert is supported by the members of the Herts & Beds Air Quality Network

Technical and forecasting, message delivery, web services and support:

The Environmental Research Group (ERG) at King's College London designed and developed this web application and provide the technological expertise to forecast air pollution and send out the airAlerts. ERG is a leading provider of air quality information and research in the UK. The group provides daily updates of air pollution across Sussex and provides the airAlert web services and support on behalf of the Sussex Air Quality Partnership.

  • Current version 3.0: release date - November 2008.
  • Database design/airAlert engine: Robert Hepburn.
  • Web design/.NET development: Sam Hope-Evans.

Research support:

The University of Brighton has provided the research and evaluation of the service since the pilot in 2006. The university has undertaken questionnaires and focus groups with participants, to assess their response to receiving messages, their actions and gather information on whether the information assisted patients to self-manage their health

Health information:

Dr Mark Jackson (Consultant Respiratory Physician), Department of Respiratory medicine at Brighton General Hospital is providing health advice and research support for the pilot.

Recruitment and publicity support:

Sussex PCT's are supporting the service by providing the link to clinics, health professionals and patients with asthma. The British Lung Foundation has continued to provide links to various Sussex Breath-easy groups to assist in the recruitment of volunteers since 2006.
